Overall – what is IAG?
IAG stands for Information, Advice and Guidance and for the purposes of Learning Gateways this Information, Advice and Guidance should be delivered or offered to a client on the subjects of learning, education, jobs and/or training.
The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) describes Information, Advice and Guidance as:
Information
Refers to data on opportunities given through printed materials; audio visual materials, computer software or through helpline services. Examples of this include: Learn Direct or this website
Advice
Refers to providing an immediate response to clients who present an enquiry or reveal a need that requires more than a straight forward information response. It is usually limited to helping with the interpretation of information. It may or may not include signposting clients to a guidance interview where a more in depth response can be provided.
Guidance
Guidance refers to an in depth interview or other activity conducted by a trained adviser which helps a client to explore a range of options, to relate information to their own needs and circumstances and to make decisions about their career and/or learning needs/progression.
What this means for Learning Gateways (what they can do to fit into these definitions)
As a Learning Gateways centre you can deliver these in the ways explained below:
Information
This means giving clients free information about learning and work. This could be about courses that are running either at your centre or at other centres, or where to go for more information.
Advice and Guidance
You can offer limited advice to clients but are not allowed to give guidance to clients on specific courses or learning. To offer Guidance you must hold a relevant qualification in this field and therefore guidance interviews are only carried out by qualified professionals. The local providers of this service are:
- Learn Direct 0800 100900
- Nord Anglia Lifetime Development 01302 366065
- The Careers Exchange 01302 326107
- Connexions 01302 366065
A small number of Learning Gateway centres have agreed to trial delivery of IAG using webcam technology, more details of this service are available here.
